A Poem by Brother Ryan
I have learned in life that hope creates anxiety and thus is not a preferred pattern of thought. Rather it is better to be still and to have no thought but of the present. Learn from, but don't live in, yesterday. Don't live in tomorrow, but do prepare for it today. Live today, in the moment, knowing that part of today belongs to yesterday, and part of it belongs to tomorrow. Enjoy the present as it is: the past, now, and future. But to hope for a blessing is to distract from the blessings you already have in the here and now. 'Live each day as it is your last', is the old saying, and it is Truth. Because to live in tomorrow is to assume there is one. Hope distracts us from today, from the reality of now. How many hopes have you never had fulfilled? Fulfillment of hopes don't come from hope. Hope feeds desire and desire feeds anxiety. Hope is nothing, it is vain. Give up hope and gain.
Action is needed to fulfill and obtain. We can hope or we can act, or, we can have hope as we act. If we can't, or won't, act then hope is not motivation, it is desperation. Hope is empty with out faithful action. Faith only works if there are works done in faith. I have sat and hoped, waiting patiently for nothing that came. I have acted upon my hope, and still the results the same. No longer do I hope, for hope is but a childish wish. Instead, I have learned, to act when I can, without hope, but without despair; to do with care, but free of care. I have learned that I can only control myself, not the universe. I can not make things happen with the silly mental will of hope. I can only control my mental state, not my fate. It is not me that moves mountains with mustard seeds of hope. It is He who made the mountain that places it where He will. I can't calm the waves of a tempest with hope. I can't walk on water no matter how intense the hope. It is not my hope that brings good fortune my way. I can only will myself to control myself. To be still, to be anxious for, and to hope, or expect, nothing. To give up hope is to accept today. To give up hope is not letting go of the rope but grabbing ahold of Life -to have hands free to embrace the blessings of the here and now.
